Getting Started with Cloud Cost Optimization
Learn the foundational principles of FinOps and how to start reducing your cloud spend without sacrificing performance.
Cloud costs can spiral quickly without the right guardrails. In this post I’ll walk through the core FinOps principles I’ve applied across dozens of engagements to help organizations regain control of their cloud spend.
Why Cloud Costs Get Out of Hand
Most organizations don’t have a visibility problem — they have an accountability problem. Engineers provision resources to move fast, and finance teams receive invoices they can’t decode. The gap between the two is where waste lives.
The three most common culprits I encounter:
- Idle resources — VMs and databases running 24/7 that are only used during business hours
- Over-provisioned instances — Right-sizing is rarely done after initial deployment
- Untagged resources — Without tagging, you can’t attribute cost to teams or products
Building a FinOps Practice
FinOps isn’t a tool you buy — it’s a cultural shift. Here’s the framework I recommend:
1. Establish Visibility First
Before you can optimize, you need accurate data. Enable cost allocation tags across all accounts, set up budget alerts, and create dashboards your engineering teams will actually look at.
2. Create Team Accountability
Publish cost dashboards to each engineering team. When teams can see their own spend, behavior changes naturally. Pair this with a chargeback or showback model so leadership has clear data.
3. Automate the Easy Wins
Shut down non-production environments outside of business hours. This single change typically yields 30–40% savings on dev/test infrastructure.
4. Right-Size Continuously
Use your cloud provider’s recommendations engine (AWS Compute Optimizer, Azure Advisor, GCP Recommender) on a monthly cadence. Don’t treat right-sizing as a one-time project.
The Result
Organizations that follow this approach consistently see 25–40% reduction in cloud spend within the first 90 days — without slowing down engineering velocity.
